5-axis VS. 3-axis Machining

With a standard 3-axis CNC machine, the spindle moves in three directions—up and down, side to side, and back and forth. A 5-axis machine takes it a step further by adding two more axes. Depending on the setup, either the table tilts on two additional axes, or the spindle itself swivels to reach different angles.
This extra flexibility allows the cutting tool to approach the workpiece from many more angles, making it possible to create highly intricate shapes with ease.
Another big advantage? Fewer setups. Since the tool can reach more areas without manual repositioning, machinists don’t have to constantly flip the workpiece. This not only improves efficiency but also makes the entire machining process significantly faster.

Simultaneous 5-axis CNC

Simultaneous (or continuous) 5-axis machining allows the machine to move across all five axes at the same time, without stopping. This makes the process incredibly fast since there’s no need to pause between cutting tool movements.

3+2-axis CNC

Another approach is 3+2-axis machining, where the machine can adjust the cutting tool’s angle on the 4th and 5th axes, but only when it’s not actively cutting along the X, Y, and Z axes. While this method can be slower than simultaneous 5-axis machining, it often results in greater stability, better precision, and longer tool life.
